A 5-month-old boy was killed this morning when an SUV drove into him and his mother while they crossed Riverside Parkway in Lansdowne.

Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reported that the mother was pushing the boy in a stroller just after 8 a.m. today. The two were crossing Riverside Parkway from Coton Manor Drive toward Kipheart Drive. The mother was walking with the child in the marked crosswalk when they were struck by a 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by an adult male driver. The driver was turning west onto Riverside Parkway from Coton Manor Drive.

It was initially reported that she was headed home after walking her older child to school at Seldens Landing Elementary, but it appears now that she was just on a morning walk, according to Kraig Troxell, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office.

She is being treated for injuries described as serious but not life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is reviewing the results of the investigation with the Loudoun County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office to determine any possible charges. The driver remained on the scene after the incident and was being questioned.

“Apparently he didn’t see her,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said on the scene this morning. “As far as accidents go, this is just tragic.”
